THE 12 WONDERS OF PORTUGAL
This Tour wants to reveal the 12 wonders of Portugal, that is the sites classified by UNESCO as World Heritage.
All over the country, including the islands of Madeira and Azores, we can find true pieces of Art, natural or man-made, that deserve our admiration. Come with us and discover what also belongs to you!
Guimarães, where Portugal was born, will be the starting point and there you will stay for three nights. It’s a medieval city, a symbol to Portuguese people, whose heritage was preserved with balance and distinction. Its unique historic centre re- ceived the classification of UNESCO in 2001. The first two days will be spent discover- ing Guimarães and its secrets.
On the third day, the destination will be Porto, 50 kms away from Guimarães. Porto is closely linked to the River Douro, which gave the city its development, its beauty, its cosmopolitan and commercial look and its famous wine – Port Wine. In 1996, the city centre of Porto was classified as World Heritage.
On the fourth day, you will approach the heart of the Douro Valley, which is not only a river, but also a living entity with its own character. The vineyards of the Douro valley, World Heritage since 2001, represent the oldest demarcated wine. You will have the opportunity to visit farms producers of wine, to have a trip by train and by the typical Rabelo boat, enjoying the scenery.
In the morning of the fifth day, you will visit the Archaeological Park of the Côa Val- ley to admire the carvings, classified in 1998. It’s a magnificent outdoor museum which reveals artistic works, surrounded by outstanding scenery.
On the sixth day, leaving the Douro region, the tour continues to the centre of the country. The next stop will be in Coimbra, the capital of the Portuguese knowledge. This city has the third oldest university in Europe and a fantastic library.
In the morning of the seventh day, you will visit the Monastery of Batalha, near the place where an important battle for the consolidation of Portugal as an independ- ent nation took place in 1385. It was classified in 1983.
In the afternoon, you will arrive at Tomar, where it is the Convent of Christ, World Heritage since 1983. It represents a mixture of different architectural styles, reflect- ing seven centuries of History. Then, you will admire the Monastery of Alcobaça, classified in 1989. In spite of being almost 900 years old, it keeps its divisions intact and all its splendour. You will end the day in Óbidos, a medieval city, perfectly pre- served, surrounded by walls and looking like an illustrated postcard.
On the eighth day, you will reach Lisbon, the capital, where you will stay for three nights. The ninth day will be spent exploring the city. One of the stops will be at the Monastery of Jerónimos, World Heritage since 1983, a precious jewel from the kingdom of D. Manuel I. Another stop must be at the Tower of Belém, also classified in 1983.
On the tenth day you will visit Sintra, whose natural scenery was classified in 1995. In Sintra you will find a refreshing and romantic atmosphere, as well as notable monuments.
On the eleventh day you will go to the fortified city of Elvas, which was classified in 2012. Finally, you will visit Évora, a city considered a living museum, whose city cen- tre was classified in 1986. It’s a city full of authenticity with well preserved cultural heritage.
The tour around the wonders of Portugal will end here. There is still the possibility to continue the tour visiting other classified sites in the island of Madeira – The Lauris- silva Forest – and in the islands of Azores – the city centre of Angra do Heroísmo and the vineyards of Pico.
