According to legend a rich landowner in Barcelos has given a banquet where was stolen a valuable piece of silver. A pilgrim on his way to Galicia “S. Tiago of Compostela” raised suspicions and was accused of the crime. He was judged and guilt by the court, but always claimed innocence. In a last chance to justify, seeing a rooster cooked in a platter next him, Galician yelled "If I'm innocent this cock will crow". To the amazement of all, the cock crowed and the prisoner was released. Generation after generation the story was falling by the wayside and today few know how did the Barcelos Cockerel, but their joy splashed with vibrant colors remains unmistakable and raises it to national symbol.
